TBHQ (tert-Butylhydroquinone)
Definition
A synthetic antioxidant derived from butane, used to extend the shelf life of oils, fats, and processed foods by preventing oxidation and rancidity.
Why It Matters
At higher doses, TBHQ has been shown to cause nausea, delirium, and liver enlargement in animal studies. The National Library of Medicine notes that prolonged exposure may have immunotoxic effects, potentially weakening the immune response to infections and reducing vaccine efficacy. It is banned in Japan and restricted in the EU.
