Definition
A synthetic antioxidant chemically related to BHA, added to fats, oils, and cereals to prevent oxidation and rancidity. Also used in cosmetics, rubber, and petroleum products.
Why It Matters
BHT is classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity in humans, but animal studies show tumor-promoting effects. It is banned in food in Japan, Romania, Sweden, and Australia. California's AB 418 (2023) bans it from school foods.
