Red 40 (Allura Red AC)
Definition
A petroleum-derived azo dye and the most widely consumed artificial food dye in the United States. It produces a bright red color and is used purely for cosmetic purposes — it adds no flavor, nutrition, or preservative function.
Why It Matters
A 2021 California OEHHA report concluded that synthetic food dyes, including Red 40, can cause or exacerbate neurobehavioral problems in some children, particularly hyperactivity and inattention. Red 40 is banned or requires mandatory warning labels in the EU. California's AB 2316 (Food Safety Act) signs a ban on Red 40 in school foods effective 2027.
