Heavy Metals and Toxins in Baby Food: What Parents Must Know
Heavy metals in baby food: What parents must know. Learn how to protect your child from arsenic and lead contamination.
In February 2021, a US Congressional investigation revealed that major baby food brands contained dangerously high levels of toxic heavy metals, including inorganic arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury.

What Was Found
The Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy tested baby food products from seven major manufacturers. The results were alarming: some products had arsenic levels up to 91 times the FDA limit for bottled water, and lead levels up to 177 times the limit. These metals accumulate in soil and water from historical pesticide use and industrial pollution, and crops like rice and sweet potatoes absorb them easily.
Fetal and Infant Neurodevelopment Risks
Infants and young children are highly vulnerable to heavy metals because their brains and nervous systems are developing rapidly, and their bodies absorb metals more efficiently than adults. Exposure to even trace amounts of lead or arsenic is linked to permanent drops in IQ, behavioral problems (such as ADHD), and immune system dysfunction.
How to Reduce Exposure
- Avoid Rice-Based Products: Rice absorbs 10x more arsenic than other grains. Replace rice puffs and rice teethers with oat, barley, or quinoa products.
- Vary Your Child's Diet: Avoid feeding the same food (like sweet potatoes or carrots, which grow underground and absorb more metals) every day.
- Prepare Homemade Purées: Pureeing fresh, organic fruits and vegetables at home reduces processing-related contaminants and gives you total control over the raw ingredients.
