Thousands of chemical additives are approved for use in the food supply, and many of them have been linked to inflammation, hormonal disruption, and chronic disease. Here are some of the most common offenders hiding in everyday products.

1. Titanium Dioxide (E171)

Used to make foods appear whiter and brighter, titanium dioxide is found in candies, coffee creamers, frosting, and chewing gum. In 2022, the EU officially banned E171 due to genotoxicity concerns — the ability of nanoparticles to accumulate in organs and damage DNA. Yet it remains completely legal in US foods.

2. High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)

An industrial sweetener that goes directly to the liver. Fructose overload forces the liver to generate fat (de novo lipogenesis), leading directly to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome.

3. Refined Seed Oils

Canola, soybean, corn, and vegetable oils are extracted using extreme heat and toxic solvents like hexane. They are high in pro-inflammatory omega-6 linoleic acid, which oxidizes easily, causing cellular damage in the body.

4. Potassium Bromate

A flour improver banned in the EU, Canada, and Brazil because it is classified as a possible human carcinogen. It is still widely used in US commercial baking.
