Palm oil has health risks and hides under 200+ names. Learn how to identify it and make healthier choices.

Palm oil is the world's most consumed vegetable oil, found in approximately 50% of all supermarket products, including cookies, peanut butter, margarine, detergents, and cosmetics. Health Concerns: Palmitic Acid and Cardiovascular Risk

Palm oil is roughly 50% saturated fat, primarily composed of palmitic acid. Numerous cardiovascular health studies suggest that high consumption of palmitic acid raises blood cholesterol levels, specifically LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, increasing the risk of atherosclerosis and heart disease. Additionally, refined palm oil subjected to high temperatures during industrial deodorization forms harmful process contaminants called glycidyl fatty acid esters (GE), which are classified as genotoxic carcinogens.

Severe Environmental Consequences

The global demand for cheap palm oil has driven massive deforestation in tropical regions of Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia and Malaysia. This has resulted in the destruction of peatlands and rainforests, releasing vast amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and pushing endangered species like the orangutan, Sumatran tiger, and pygmy elephant to the brink of extinction.
