Non-GMO Project Verified

Also known as: Non-GMOGMO Free

Definition

A third-party certification from the Non-GMO Project confirming that a product has been produced according to rigorous best practices for GMO avoidance, including testing of high-risk ingredients. The threshold for GMO contamination is 0.9% or less.

Why It Matters

This certification provides assurance against genetically modified ingredients, which is significant because over 90% of US corn, soybeans, and canola are genetically modified. However, Non-GMO does not mean organic — a Non-GMO product can still be heavily sprayed with pesticides and contain artificial additives. For maximum protection, look for products that are both USDA Organic AND Non-GMO Project Verified.
