7 Hidden Toxins Lurking in Your Everyday Food

From breakfast cereal to salad dressing, harmful additives hide in plain sight. Learn which toxins to watch for and how to avoid them.

Walk through any grocery store and you'll see labels covered in health claims — "all natural," "made with real ingredients," "heart healthy." But flip the package around and the ingredient list tells a very different story.

Thousands of chemical additives are approved for use in the food supply, and many of them have been linked to inflammation, hormonal disruption, and chronic disease. Here are seven of the most common offenders hiding in everyday products.

1. Titanium Dioxide (E171)

Used to make foods appear whiter and brighter, titanium dioxide is found in candies, coffee creamers, frosting, and chewing gum. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) declared it no longer safe as a food additive in 2021 due to concerns about genotoxicity — meaning it may damage DNA. It's banned in the EU but still permitted in the US.

2. BHA and BHT (Butylated Hydroxyanisole & Butylated Hydroxytoluene)

These synthetic preservatives are added to cereal, chips, and packaged baked goods to prevent fats from going rancid. BHA is classified as "reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen" by the National Toxicology Program. BHT has been linked to liver and kidney damage in animal studies. Both are banned or restricted in several countries.

3. Sodium Nitrite

Found in bacon, hot dogs, deli meats, and other processed meats, sodium nitrite helps preserve color and prevent bacterial growth. When heated at high temperatures, nitrites can form nitrosamines — compounds strongly associated with increased risk of colorectal cancer. The World Health Organization classifies processed meat as a Group 1 carcinogen.

4. Artificial Food Dyes (Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6)

These petroleum-derived dyes are found in candy, sports drinks, cereals, and even medications. Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 account for 90% of all food dyes used. Multiple studies have linked them to hyperactivity in children. The EU requires warning labels on products containing these dyes; the US does not.

5. Carrageenan

Derived from red seaweed, carrageenan is used as a thickener in almond milk, yogurt, ice cream, and deli meats. Despite its natural origin, degraded carrageenan is a known inflammatory agent. Research has linked it to gastrointestinal inflammation, bloating, and irritable bowel symptoms in sensitive individuals.

6. High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)

HFCS is in far more products than you'd expect — bread, ketchup, yogurt, granola bars, and salad dressings. While the corn industry markets it as identical to sugar, studies show HFCS may be processed differently by the liver, contributing to fatty liver disease, insulin resistance, and obesity at higher rates than equivalent amounts of table sugar.

7. Potassium Bromate

Used to strengthen bread dough and help it rise, potassium bromate is classified as a possible human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. It's banned in the EU, Canada, Brazil, and China — but remains legal in the United States, where it's still found in some commercial breads and rolls.

How to Protect Yourself

The most effective defense is reading ingredient labels carefully — but that's easier said than done when additives hide behind chemical names. That's exactly why we built CleanLabel: point your camera at any ingredient list and our AI instantly flags every harmful additive, even when disguised under scientific aliases.

You shouldn't need a chemistry degree to know what you're eating.
